Large Shade Tree Replacement Program - 2012

Many of the largest trees in the Township have been lost over the past 20 years.  For the most part, they have reached the end of their expected life cycle, since most were planted 75-100 years ago when our Township neighborhoods were developed.  While the Township has planted replacement street trees over the years, the species have generally been small and medium-sized varieties, such as the Bradford Pear, Flowering Plum, Crabapple, Kwanzan Cherry and King Crimson Maple.

Large-species trees enhance the environment exponentially over smaller varieties.  Every leaf on a tree creates oxygen and filters pollutants in the air.  Each foot of shade-providing canopy reduces the work of our air conditioners in the summer.  Each inch of root mass improves stormwater management and the filtration of water-borne pollutants.  In addition to environmental benefits, the grandeur of large trees creates a sense of history and place for the Township, enhancing the quality of life and raising property values.

In order to protect our tree cover, we will be working with the Township on replacing those largest trees.  The Township and Tree Tenders is offering 100 free trees to residents who will plant the largest sized shade trees (50’ or taller at maturity).  We may also plant some of these in the median strips of Darby Road, West Chester Pike, Hathaway Lane, etc. and in parks throughout the Township.

-          Deadline for Spring Planting is March 31st on a first-come, first-served basis.  Residents must call the Public Works Department at 610-446-1000 x2263

-          Free trees are large-species trees only.  Offered this spring: Sugar Maple, Tulip Poplar, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, & Red Oak.  Click the link at the bottom of this page to download a description of the trees.

-          Tree Tenders will be available to discuss over the phone or make a site visit to assist with tree and placement selections.

-          Trees must be planted on the lawn side of the sidewalk unless the dogwalk is 48” or wider.

-          One tree offered per address

-          Spring 2012 planting date will be May 5th.

-          Residents should mark the spot where you would like the tree planted with a stake the week before planting.  Please make a hose or large bucket of water available on the planting day.

-          Resident must agree to water the tree once a week until mid-fall.

Trees in Township Parks - 2012

The Township is again partnering with the Haverford Township Tree Tenders Program to plant trees in our local parks.  The Tree Tenders Program, which has been active in the Township for several years, trains volunteers to plant reduced-cost bare-root trees subsidized by TreeVitalize, a state-funded program.  Saplings will be planted this spring at  Powdermill Park 4/28, Thompson Nature Tract 4/29,and Haverford Reserve TBA.  Planting days for the fall will include Elwell Field & Karakung Drive.  Contact Jeanne Angell at angellsrus@comcast.net if you can help out.

Are you interested in helping to maintain and plant shade trees on your property, in your neighborhood, and/or in Haverford Township?  A Tree Tenders Program is forming which will be supporting and encouraging the planting of shade trees in a variety of ways.

The Tree Tenders Program is organized by the PA Horticultural Society, and supported by TreeVitalize, a state-funded program.  The Horticultural Society runs an intensive 9-hour training program for Tree Tenders volunteers.  Sign up now on the PA Horticultural Society website www.pennsylvaniahorticulturalsociety.org/phlgreen/tree-training.html or call (215) 988-8844.

A group of at least three trained volunteers can organize a tree tenders group, entitling them to reduced-cost bare-root trees twice a year (March and November), as well as a free tree planting tool kit.  Usually 15-20 species of varying size trees are offered.  Some are small, flowering trees, and others are large shade trees such as oaks, maples, sycamores, etc.

In 2009, the the Llanerch Tree Tenders group was formed.  We recruited additional volunteers and have so far organized two tree planting days.  With our support, other small Tree Tenders groups have begun to form, each focusing on planting trees in one geographic area of the Township (in one neighborhood or ward, or specific public spaces such as the Grange Estate or at Haverford Reserve). As tree tenders groups are formed, the leaders of each group will work together as a committee to coordinate our work.  We also hope to work with the Shade Tree Commission on other projects, such as educational programs, Arbor Day celebrations, or conducting a survey of trees in the Township.
